Sometimes, the package is bundled along with the application. For example, you might see multiple versions of the redistributable. So, while it sometimes looks like multiple versions of the same package are installed, they are all subtly different. And unfortunately, unlike with the somewhat similar. NET Framework , Microsoft never consolidated all these older versions into a unified package.
You never really know which of your installed applications rely on each redistributable. If you uninstall a program, that program will not automatically remove the redistributable upon which it relied, since it has no way of knowing if other applications also rely upon it.
The four versions I have installed on my system right now take up less than MB of disk space, combined. We have seen some advice floating around the internet suggesting that you can remove older versions of redistributables, leaving just the most recent from each major release noted by year in place.

I understand their necessity but if this acted like a regular program and just installed any updates to the one package each time, then I wouldnt have to scratch through the skin on my forehead any more. I believe they are all independent libraries because they are only installed when they are needed.
Including them all in one file would, in many cases, take up more space than only installing the libraries as needed. Even though they have similar names, it is indeed best to think of them as separate and unrelated. Naturally reality is much more complicated than that, but this is the net result. The cost of failure would be high, and the benefit very low. JmjmNZ What you are saying is true, except for hard drives being cheap.

I have no idea if you need just one or both.
